MY HUNTING TRIP

One Sunday before my hunt, Jimpa and I went scouting. We were following our directions to where I was suppos= ed to hunt. As we were heading down the dirt road we saw a man walking at the = side of the road. We asked him if he had any luck. He said I have good news and = bad news. The good news is that I got myself a turkey, the bad news is I got a = flat tire without a spare. We asked him if he wanted a ride. So we took him to t= he main road so he could get a cell signal. Before you leave we asked if there= is a good place for hunting Elk. He said, “Ask my friend, he has gotten = Elk up here. He is camped in a tent up the road a little ways. He has a broken leg.” As we were headin= g up we saw a man sitting next to a fire. “Hey, we picked up your

friend back there, and he told us that you know where great pl= aces are to hunt Elk.” ̶= 0;Yea, right behind me is where I get them all. You can go up there if you would like.” We said thank yo= u for telling us. As we started to head up, we heard them start bugling. We were up there for three hours c= alling and listening to them bugle. We started to head back and finally we saw one= . It was a Bull Elk! He was a young one and was grazing. We put a stock on him for practice= . We got within 50 yards of him before he saw us.

When we went back, Jimpa GPS’d it, said thank you, and went home.

THE HUNT

It was Thursday afternoon when Dad picked me up from sch= ool for the hunt. We followed the same route Jimpa = and I used for scouting. We got to the road where we found the man with the flat tire. My Dad asked me where the camp was. I said when I recognize it, I will tell you. I saw a place that looked pretty much like it so I said this is i= t.

DAY 1

It was four in the morning when I woke up to the alarm clock. It was time for breakfast. Jimpa, Dad, and I got ready, ate, and went up the hil= l. That day we saw so many animals. We saw five bull Elk and ten Mule deer. Two of the Elk we could have gotten wi= th a bow. One of them was a trophy!!! We saw another three walking in a group ju= st as big as the trophy. We had no luck that day, but I had a feeling I was go= ing to get my cow tomorrow.

THE KILL

It was four in the morning when I woke up. We dressed, we ate. Jimpa was looking at the maps and told me = we didn’t go far enough. We need to go four more miles to get to the act= ual site. So we drove to the site and went up the hill. We were there for two h= ours when we saw a coyote. After he passed, Jimpa ca= me over to me and said, “You could have shot him.” I said, “I’ll get my Elk first before I get a coyote.” Half an ho= ur later, Jimpa saw a herd of Elk running across a= path. He whispered, “Joey, Elk.” I turned up

on The gun kicked so hard that I fell backwards. I didn’t know if I hit her or not. Ji= mpa came over to me and started pulling off his gloves. I thought that I had missed. He stuck out his hand to shake mine. I said, “Did I get her?” Jimpa said, “Yea, you did!= 221; I shot her in the neck and broke her neck. Jimpa = went back to camp to get my dad. While he was gone, I went over to a bush about = ten yards away, to see if the coyote might come

back to have a snack. If the coyote would have come back, I would have popped him. Jimpa and my dad showed up. We took pictures. When we= got her back to camp, we cut her up into parts. Before it was time to go to bed= , we had the traditional hunting camp meal. My Grandma Mean made a special spice= for us to use on the heart and liver. The heart and liver were real tender. It tasted good. The next day we = went home.
