Possibles

No mountain man worth his buckskins would go into the wilderness without his "Possibles Bag’. It was a soft leather drawstring pouch. He might have some pemmican and some hard tact in it. Maybe a lucky rock or bear tooth and of course caps and balls for his smoke pole. Ever see the Robert Redford movie Jeremiah Johnson? Remember the stuff Will Geer would drag out of his possibles bag.

Mankind has grown a bit softer since those times but a possibles bag is still a good idea. We keep a separate camping box with a few necessary items. It is always packed and ready to go. Dad has one in his truck.! Ours has mantles, matches, toilet paper, instant coffee, a few canned goods (potatoes, soup, stew), some aluminum foil, (Ever go camping and forget the fry pan?) water purifying tablets and a can opener.

One never knows. It is possible to have vehicle problems. It is possible to get lost. There could be a surprise July snowstorm. Well… It’s possible. There is a real possibility that one might not be quite ready to come home.

Remember, if you pack it in pack it out. Lets go camping!
