Wood Chute Trail

Have you ever wondered how they got logs down from mountains to build the city of Jerome, Arizona? Well take a hike along the wood chute trail down the side of wood chute mountain above Jerome. You will hike under the actual chute that carried logs to Jerome’s smelters during its heyday.

It is about a 5-hour hike that winds down the mountain. It goes through some tall pines and canyons. The trail itself is rated as moderate, and is 7 miles long. I would recommend starting at the top and hike down. Take two vehicles leave one at the bottom and then drive to the trail head at the top of the mountain.

To get to the trailhead, take forests road 318A west out of Jerome about 5 miles. You will be able to see the parking lot it is very well marked. This is the upper part of the trail itself. If you are going to leave a return vehicle down below you will need to take forest road 106 southwest from Jerome about 3 miles.

All along the trail are great views of the Verde valley below. Make sure you take plenty of water and a few snacks. Pack some kind of wet weather gear too. You never know when a sudden thunderstorm might appear.

If you need a map, get hicky mountain quadrangle 7.5 minute, topographic. There is no permit required, dogs are allowed but must be on a 6 ft leash. Horses are permitted.

Hope you enjoy your hike and have fun, make sure to take plenty of pictures and send us some here at azod so we can post them on the site.

Remember: If you pack it in-Pack it out. And respect other hikers on the trail

Happy hiking
