  • Make a large batch of the Mixed Beans. Separate into meal size batches and freeze. That way when you need to make a quick chili or just have a side dish, all you have to do is pull them out of the freezer.
  • Make a list of meals you want to have with the game you are hunting, prior to the hunt. That way you will have a better idea of how you want the meat cut. Get with your spouse and decide how much burger, sausage, etc. You might also want to decide how thick you want your steaks and the amount wrapped, ie: how many wrapped, how many pounds wrapped, roast size, etc…

  • When packing your ice chest for a trip, freeze a few of the drinking water bottles to use as ice. Remember the water will expand upon freezing so do not fill to the top. This helps deter having all that water (melted ice) at the bottom of your ice chest.
  • When hunting, we get up before sunrise and are not back to camp before sunset. To save on time, I do some of the food preparation at home. For example: Items that need to be cut up, meat already browned, frozen meals. I make chili beans, green chile mix, scrambled egg omelet and freeze them. All you have to do is heat them up and put in a tortilla or on a bun.
  • If you have paper wrapped items or are using the cardboard egg cartons, try wrapping these items in the plastic bags your ice comes in and placing them near the top. This helps prevent them from getting soggy.
  • Try seasoned salt. Find a kind that you really like. It can take the place of many different seasonings, simplifying time and space. If you always use the same mixture of several seasonings, try pre-mixing them in one jar.
