APACHE LAKE: SMALLMOUTHS AND MORE On a cold, rainy, windy day, I can’t think of a place I’d rather be than Lake Apache. This is the kind of weather that will turn most fish and fishermen off. The key word is "most". Smallmouth anglers look forward to these days knowing the smallies tendency to become very active in such weather. Anyone who has caught a smally will tell you it’s worth a little discomfort. I can’t tell you of a better fighter in all of the fresh water fish, and it’s hard to find a better lake for this species than Apache. Recent AG&F surveys show an extremely strong population at the lake. I have spent two of the last four weekends there and can tell you the quality of these fish are also better than average. I caught or witnessed several smallies between 2-5lbs. Find the rocks and you’ll find the smallmouths. Apache Lake is also known as a spot to catch trophy size largemouths. At the recent BASS Federation tournament, a couple of 5+lb. bass were weighed in. I also hear the lake is one of the states best for summertime night fishing. Other popular species in Apache are: walleye, crappie, and catfish. Bluegill, yellow bass, and warmouth bass also reside in the lake. Apache Lake has much more to offer than just fishing. Although I can’t believe there is anything else to go to the lake for, my wife swears that there is. Sightseeing and first class facilities are tops on her list. Apache is nestled in the Tonto National Forest, thirty-three miles from Apache Junction on highway 88. The lake is surrounded by painted walls and beautiful desert. Deer, bighorn sheep, eagles and javelina are just a few of the wildlife calling the lake home. As for facilities, the lake offers everything to make your stay a good one. The campgrounds and their restrooms are well maintained, and offer individual or group spaces. R.V. hook-ups, showers and laundry machines are also available. My last trip to Apache we stayed at the Apache Lake Marina and Resort. This truly is a first class facility. The rooms are affordable and offer a lakeside view. Just a short walk and you come to the main lodge. There you have a convenience store, restaurant, and lounge, along with a volleyball and basketball court. Boat storage, rentals, gas, and tackle are also waterside. For more information on the marina, call (520) 467-2511 or check out their web site at www.apachelake.com. The facilities at Apache Lake are open year round. Some of the special events include an annual Easter egg hunt, along with New Years Eve and July 4th activities. KIP POLLAY
