by B.A.S.S. Communications 08/25/2001 - Mt. CLEMENS, MI. .... Since winning the 1999 BASS Masters Classic championship, Davy Hite had not recorded a top five finish in a CITGO BASSMASTER Tour event. That streak ended in grand style on Saturday when the South Carolina pro brought in the week's largest limit, 19 pounds, six ounces to claim the championship and $110,000 at the Michigan CITGO BASSMASTER Tour event on Lake St. Clair. Hite's total weight of 68-1 won gave him a 5 pound, 9 ounce margin over Indiana pro Chip Harrison, who finished second. "It feels real good," said an elated Hite. "It's great to get a good start on the season. I hope this is the start of good things to come." Harrison's four-day total of 62-8 earned him $49,000. Scott Rook brought in 61-14, giving the Arkansas pro a third place finish and $37,000. Texan Gary Klein finished fourth with 58-11, winning $36,000, and Florida's Peter Thliveros had 57-13, good for the $17,500 fifth place prize. Hite relied on two lures -- a 1/2 -ounce Hawg Caller spinnerbait and a Gambler jumping shad, a soft plastic jerkbait. -- to accumulate his winning catch. "The area had patchy grass along a slight drop in about three feet of water," explained Hite who fished on the Canadian side of Lake St. Clair. "The spinnerbait worked well for me during the first three days, but the jumping shad enabled me to catch all of my bass today." Harrison, who led after the second day, wasn't disappointed with his second place finish. "I'm real happy with the way I fished, considering I didn't catch many during practice," said Harrison. "I used a variety of lures, but a Nichols spinnerbait and tube and a Norman crankbait were the baits that produced the bigger fish." Arkansas' Larry Nixon fell to a tie for sixth place after taking the lead going into the final day. He ended the competition tied at 57-9 with Michigan's Kevin VanDam. Illinois's Tom Burns finished eighth with 56-14, New Jersey's Kotaro Kiriyama was ninth with 54-14 and Texan Bill Wilcox finished tenth with 48-6. Anglers competed in the event for an overall purse of $478,000. Weigh-ins for the event took place at Metro Beach Metropark.
