“MOJO MAGIC”

Arizona bass anglers are often faced with the tough combination of a highly pressured extremely clear lake.  Even your seasoned pros have had plenty of trouble with this scenario.  In fact, some have even turned to magic to put fish in the boat.  I’m talking about “mojo magic.”

The mogo rig was initially developed as a western finesse tactic, but has since become a secret weapon of bass pros everywhere.  It is basically a downsized version of the carolina rig.  The mojo weight is long and slender, with rounded ends and is usually pegged with a rubber strip about 18” from a small #1 or #2 hook.  It is best rigged on a spinning reel with a medium heavy, 6-6-1\2 rod.  Most pros suggest using 6-8 lb. test, no more than 10 lb.  The typical baits of choice are three to four inch lizards or worms, though tube baits, reapers and spider jigs are worth a try.  The retrieve is similar to the Carolina rigs sweeping action except you will want to slowly drag the bottom.  Remember to keep your line tight, and your tip low.  Strikes often occur as the mojo is bumping off rocks or other structure.  If you aren’t gelling any strikes you might try varying your retrieve by speeding up, slowing down, or even hopping the rig.

The mojo works best in clear water up to 20’.  Try fishing humps, points, rock piles or shorelines.  Virtually anywhere there is a change in depth.  The mojo rig will help you catch fish all year long.  All you have to do is believe in “mojo magic”…. Kip Pollay
