WON Bass
More than 300 anglers will
compete in U.S. Open |
09/03/2001 - Las Vegas, NV .... A field of 312 anglers will take to the
waters of Lake Mead on Sept. 10-12 in the 2001 WON BASS Miller High Life
$460,000 U.S. Open bass tournament. The field includes Pro and AAA anglers from
the states of California, Arizona, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Idaho, New
Mexico, Wyoming, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, D.C. There also are 25 anglers
from the nation of Japan.
"The lake level will be a lot different to those anglers who fished here
the past two or three years. It's down about 20 feet from last year, but right
about where it was during the mid 1990s" said Mike Kennedy, WON BASS
director. "It's about the same level as the 1995 edition of the Open when
Gary Yamamoto of Mineola, Texas, won — and he'll be here to try and regain
that championship. Pat Donoho of Las Vegas won here in 1993 under similar
circumstances, as did Kevin Wiggins of Fresno in 1994."
The defending champion is veteran Pro angler David Gliebe of Stockton, who
was one of bass fishing's earliest ‘superstars' back in the late 70s and early
80s when he went on to national fame. In his career, Gliebe has won 44 boats and
3 vehicles with victories in many tournament circuits around the country.
The WON BASS Miller High Life U.S. Open is the West's richest bass tournament
with a total cash purse at least $460,000 including sponsor participation of
over $75,000 in merchandise.
First place in the Pro Division includes $50,000 cash, a Chris Barell
sculpture championship trophy, a Ranger 518VX "Miller High Life"
special bass boat and a Ford Lariat F-150 extended cab pickup truck. The boat
and trailer features a Mercury 175 Optimax outboard, Lowrance X-15 and X-85
depth finders, Exide Stowaway batteries and MotorGuide 767 trolling motor. The
first place package is worth more than $115,000.
This extravaganza staged by WON BASS and Miller High Life is the most
prestigious event that any angler can enter West of the Mississippi River.
Anglers come from all over the nation to compete, in addition to anglers from
across the Pacific Ocean.
Sunday, Sept. 9 is an official off-limits day on Lake Mead, with the
competition staged on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. This is the day anglers and
tackle reps get together at "Sponsor Row" and receive samples of
sponsor products in the Club Madrid showroom at the Sunset Station Hotel &
Casino. In addition to "Sponsor Row," sponsor participation at the
Sunday afternoon pairings will include many "door prizes" that will
swell the promotional package to more than $75,000 in free merchandise for the
anglers.
The U.S. Open entry fee features two of the nation's best paybacks with the
Miller High Life Daily Double on big bass and big stringer. Each day there are
five chances to win a big bass award of $2,000 for the top five bass! In
addition, there is $2,500 each for the Pro and AAA who weigh in each day's
largest stringer (5 bass limit per boat).
For the angler catching the largest overall bass of the tournament, there's a
new Ranger 175VS boat and trailer with a Mercury 90 hp four-stroke outboard,
Lowrance electronics, Exide Stowaway batteries and MotorGuide trolling motor.
There is NO bass tournament circuit in the country with big fish/stringer prizes
to match these.
Callville Bay Resort again will be the site of the launch and weigh-ins for
the tournament. The official housing for the anglers is the luxurious Sunset
Station Hotel & Casino. All pre- and post-tournament activities will be held
at the hotel, so it is required of all non-local residents to make reservations
for rooms at the hotel for at least Sunday, Monday and Tuesday nights.
The wives at the hotel will be hosted at a special breakfast for the ladies
sponsored by Paul Leader of El Cajon Ford.
WON BASS Miller High Life tournaments are sponsored by Ranger Boats, Mercury
outboards, Quantum rods and reels, MotorGuide trolling motors, El Cajon Ford,
Miller Brewing Co., Daiwa rods and reels, Berkley line and Frenzy lures,
