It Pays to Keep Your Eyes Open

It was a great day on the water already and time to head home quickly came. “OK guys lets wind them in and head for the dock.” The Coronado Islands started to fade in the background. Our 25-foot center console was making 28 knots and we should easily cover the next 6-mile back to port. “Hey look at the birds over there” a voice barged in over the roar of the 225 HP Mercury. Sure enough a huge bird school started to develop. Seagulls pounded the surface of the water and the Turns swooped down as the caught baitfish on the top. There are fish here.

We quickly turned hard to starboard to catch up with the feeding birds. We are in the area. Pulling back the throttle and slowing down we realized this was not going to be our average stop. I concentrated on a Turn to watch what he was feeding on. He dives down and just before he hits the water a huge barracuda breaks the surface then another and another. We were in the middle of one of the biggest schools of Barracuda I had ever seen. Barracuda could be seen boiling and breaking the surface of the water for a half-mile in every direction.

Get a bait in the water. The sardine with a 2/0 hook hits the water and immediately there was a hook up. Then a swim bait went over the side, fish on. I made a cast with a Tady AA. One crank, two cranks and we had a triple hook up on the boat. After a few minutes the first fish flopped on the deck, a large 8-pound barracuda. Another sardine another barracuda, another cast with a swim bait another Barracuda, another few cranks with the Tady AA another Barracuda. Every thing we threw in the water was bit. Fish after fish hit the deck. We could do no wrong. After 45 minutes of a wide-open barracuda bite our arms we getting tired and we were over due at the dock. A few more cast, a few more fish then we had to finish the 6 miles back to the dock. We had landed over 50 Barracuda, all but one were released.

As we motored thru the no wake zone Don McDowell, host of Shake Rattle and Troll, Barry Lewis, from Marado Reels and I talked about the incredible fishing event we just experienced. We could not believe our good fortune. We were on our way home and almost missed out on this opportunity, “It pays to keep your eyes open.”
