Hi- I enjoy your site- thank you for providing it! It's not easy finding info about hunting in AZ. Howver, I did want to mention I found your article on coyotes ("Coyote- nature's opportunist") rather biased. As someone who enjoys seeing and hearing coyotes and considers them one of the highlights of living in the desert, I think your article could have listed their good traits, too- such as rodent control, feral cat control (which are otherwise devastating on small game and wildife), and the fact that there are many of us who enjoy just having them around. Saying they "decimate" the deer herds seems an extreme statement, considering that they are native predators who have yet to wipe out deer or antelope in all the thousands of years those species have coexisted. Besides, if they are a decimator of deer herds, how do you explain the large deer population in Grand Canyon National Park, which has no "coyote control" whatsoever-and a healthy number of coyotes? I see more deer in that park than most other places in AZ... Admittedly, they can lower antelope survival, but even then, the main factors in antelope population decline have been habitat loss, drought, and degraded ranges. Well- got that off my chest. Just remember that there are two (or more!) sides to every story. Thanks for hearing me out, JC 10-28-01 |
