Beginner Quail Hunting So you want to be successful in your in your hunt for desert quail? Well, I’m no expert but I’ve had some luck with quail. So just maybe I’ve a hint or two that you may find useful. First, I’d find a remote spot one not visited frequently…a spot far
from the roadside. These birds will
be less prone to run and you’ll find them in larger numbers as well.
This covey’s can be successfully hunted with a lot of patience and a
good dog. It pays to be quite while hunting these
remote coveys and it’ll pay off if your dog is well trained, one you don’t
have to stay on top off. While you’re out there, listen for the
quail calling out in the distance…these will probably be look-out birds. Most coveys post sentries to keep watch while the others
feed. You will need to keep a good
eye on the horizon for these sentries. Once
you’ve spotted them move slowly…quietly and vary your approach. Now once you’ve flushed the covey-stay
low. It’s best not to give chase.
Give it a rest maybe 15 to 20 minutes before moving out.
They’ll start calling again by this time, so work your way slowly
towards the calls…Ah there they are…go ahead, take your best shot. Thom Stocks Staff Writer |
