An Incredible Experience
Today, like many past December mornings, I awoke at 5AM to shower and dress for the hunt. My wife stayed peacefully sleeping as I kissed her cheek and slipped out the door. I had prepared well and all was ready for the day’s activities. I met my friends at a local restaurant and enjoyed the banter and anticipation of what the day would bring. This was a hunt without guns. It was a scouting expedition, with a cameraman to collect footage and a mission from my friends at Modern Call Products. I had a new call that Mark Cain and our Hunting Editor; Louis Urquides had come up with called “the In-ex Mule deer call”. We scouted our way across the lower Sonora Desert. We saw several groups of does, but no bucks were with them. Signifying that the Rut had not yet started. It seemed like we would not get to test our call. RL Gray and his daughter Le Anna along with Ken Coon were with me and it was RL who prompted me to test the call on a group of bedded does. Ken and I began to make our way toward the deer while RL and Le Anna watched. We managed to sneak within about 60 yards before they stood up in alarm. I immediately got on the grunt call. Surprisingly the animals immediately calmed down and became obviously curious.
We continued to advance and each time the doe became nervous and showed signs of bolting I would blow on the call and they would calm down and sometimes actually move toward us. This fun continued for about 20 minutes and we were able to get within 35 yards of them.
Time and time again I would stop the deer from leaving and turn them back toward me. After we thought we had finished, Ken caught this shot...look over my right shoulder!
It was an incredible experience; I have seen young bucks and doe called with a fawn call before, but never with a buck grunt. Our day in the desert was very rewarding especially since we got it all on film. I will relive the experience again and again. It was a great day. We had proved that the call works for our friends at Modern Call Products and I added another memory to reflect on during other cold Arizona nights just before archery deer season. Christmas approaches, we light our fireplaces, pray for snow and dream of opening day. Merry Christmas Robert Glenn Willis CEO, AZOD
