A Smile for all Seasons By Stephanie Rainey
Thirteen year old, Matt Platt from Eager, Arizona has a reason to smile. He recently shot his very first buck during the Junior Arizona Mule Deer Association’s (JAMDA) Deer and Cow Elk Camp at Buffalo Crossing. JAMDA along with the Arizona Elk Society sponsored the four-day camp to all juniors and their families hunting in Units 27 and Unit 1 during the Cow Elk and Mule Deer hunt.
Matt was hunting with his father, Scott, in unit 27 when they decided to try a spot where they had seen some deer earlier in the morning. They hiked into the area about a half a mile and then got set up. Matt pulled out the bipod on his .708 and began to wait. He and his father decided that they would only stay for another 30 minutes, as the sun was slowly setting. Scott got out the binoculars and saw 2 bucks coming in. One buck was a four point and the other was a spike. The four point was between some trees and didn’t present a good shot so Matt decided he would go for the 2 point since it was in a perfect position. Matt said he took aim, pulled the trigger and shot. That’s all Matt would need as the deer went down with one and only one shot.
Scott stated, “I’m real proud of Matt, he was calm and cool.” Scott explained how Matt practiced a lot with his .708 rifle before the season even started and it showed. When asked what he thought about taking his first deer Matt said, “I’m pretty excited and proud that I got a deer.” Some of Matt’s friends and family were also along on the hunt and were there to congratulate him on a job well done. Congratulations on the hunt, Matt. I hope the memories and smiles of your hunt, last all season. Stephanie Rainey is an outdoor freelance writer, hunter and outdoorswoman from Lakeside, AZ.
