Brett’s First Big Game Hunt
Hunter: Brett Ramey Age: 11 – First “big game” hunt Hunt: 6A Junior Cow Elk Date: Saturday, October 5, 2002 Location: South of Lake Mary Rifle: Savage Youth Model 308 Ammo: Winchester 180grain Power Point
We spent the morning positioned over a meadow that proved to hold elk consistently in the early morning and evening hours. At least that was the trend in the weeks leading up to the hunt. Temperatures in the low 30’s, combined with the lack of animal movement, not to mention the patience of an eleven-year-old, lead to the decision to check a few other locations that had produced solid signs of elk traffic.
As we retreated from our original location and moved though the woods, we notice a young cow and a calf moving off in the distance. The initial plan was to pursue the two elk in hopes of locating the entire herd that is known to frequent the area. The terrain was transitioning from relatively flat land to rolling hills covered with stands of ponderosa pine and high grass… perfect for stalking.
We had a lot of ground to make up and began to hustle along a ridge that ran parallel to the direction the elk were moving. As we reached the crest of the ridge we lost contact with the two elk but were able to “glass” 13 cows and a nice 5X6 bull that were feeding about 300 yards to our left. The prospects of tagging a nice cow increased faster than our heart rates, now we had to figure out how to get closer.
As we knelt in the tall grass, I maintained visual contact with the herd and pondered our next move. Brett decided to take one last look at the hollow to our right, within seconds I heard him hit the ground and whisper “Cow! There’s a cow”. He was right. It seems a few stragglers were making their way back to the herd and we were right between them.
A single cow appeared about 95 yards away and started to move parallel to our position, providing a great broadside opportunity. Brett laid his riffle across my backpack and identified the cow in his scope. He calmly asked if he should “take the shot” I replied “do it”… he did. A single shot rang out at 8:15 in the morning. The cow spun around and ran 50 yards before falling. A perfect shot.
Brett’s first hunt, his first shot, his first elk… He has yet to field dress one!
