Fulfilling Grandpa’s Promise Lori Winkler
My name is Lori. I want to let you know about my first hunting trip. Since I was 6 years old my grandpa told me that he would take me hunting. He passed away before he could fulfill my dream.
Five years ago I met a gentleman who loves to hunt, camp, and fish. In that 5 years we have done over a thousand camping trips but we never put in for hunting. This man is now my fiancé. He has hunted for more than 20 years and in 2002 he asked me if I would like to try it. I have never shot at an animal in my life but I said yes. So my two daughters and I put in for deer and elk this year. We didn’t get the elk tag but we did get drawn for deer.
It seemed like forever before the big day came. We left on a Wednesday afternoon, got to our area 17A and set up camp. A friend of the family brought up my other three children to experience the hunt as well. Thursday morning we woke up and went scouting. We saw a rather large camp. The children from the camp on quads were tearing up the hillside. So we tried another area, drove back to camp, had dinner and went to bed at 7 o’clock.
Friday morning, the first morning of the hunt, we got up at 4:30 and had our coffee and went to our area and saw there does. We hunted all day and that is all we saw, the three does. On Saturday morning we drove to our next hunting spot and we saw three does and a buck. We did not get a shot. We hunted all day on Saturday and went back to camp and had dinner. Sunday afternoon we saw three bucks. My fifteen year old daughter, Tiffany, got a shot off but missed a six point.
We went back the following weekend and saw four does and a buck but no shooting. It was now the last weekend of the season and I was getting discouraged. Saturday morning my other daughter, Crystal. 18, and I had an experience like you see on TV. A four point walked 25 feet in front of us. She could not get a shot at the time because I was in the way. So it took off and my fiancé grunted and stopped the buck but Crystal could not get the gun off safety.
It was now Sunday, our last day of hunting. We drove , we walked and did not see anything. Crystal had prayed to the lord and asked him to let me get a deer and she promised that she would donate some of the meat. She did not care if she got a deer or not, as long as I got one.
At 4:50 P.M. my fiancé spotted 4 deer. There was a spike with them and we started looking for a clear shot. We managed to get within 75 yards. My fiancé told me to hold my breath, count to three and pull the trigger slowly. I aimed at the spike and did what he said. I thought I missed him but Crystal didn’t think so. We walked up the hill and found some blood spots and started tracking. I shot him at 5:20 and found him at 5:30. The spike turned out to be a small two point. I have lived my dream that my grandfather gave to me through my fiancé. I’m going to donate part of my deer to the Operation Hunt For the Hungry. And if God willing I will be putting for deer, elk, and antelope with my two daughters next year. |
