My Son’s First Deer

Told by Rick Layne

Written by Linda Dightmon

My son Paul is eighteen years old and like many young people his age is going through some tough times. He was lucky this year and drew a 12A east buck tag.  I am familiar with the West Side of the Kaibab Plateau but had never hunted the east. My job keeps me pretty busy so I asked for help on AZOD’s hunting chat board.  I was pleasantly surprised with the help that I got back.  I got several detailed responses on the chat board and also some other information via email.  So, armed with this new knowledge we began my sons deer hunt.

The first day was pretty much a bust but we still enjoyed a full day in the woods. The next morning we went to another place recommended by the AZOD chat board people. It was about 8:30 in the morning and I was afraid that another morning was going to end without us seeing a buck. We were walking along a ridge when we spotted two deer. One was a buck.  I stayed back and had Paul go ahead to see if he could get a shot.

He got within range and attempted a shot. Only problem was he still had the safety on. He flipped the safety off and fired one time. The buck went down in his tracks. I will never forget the look on Paul’s face. If only I would have had a camera. He was on Cloud Nine the rest of the day.  This buck is a real pretty 3 x 3 with perfectly matching points. A real trophy for us.

We field dressed the deer together and took it back to the truck to skin him out. I had printed out directions for caping and we drug them out of the glove box. Just as we were getting started it began to sleet and snow and it didn’t let up the rest of the day.  We had a great time working on this deer while trying to read the directions even as the ink was running down the page.

This has to have been one of the best times we have ever spent together.(Dad was a little proud) Thanks to Deerslayer, Louis Urquider, Coex, TLH, and Craig (Been There) for your help. It made the difference.
