The Scent Factor

Scent, social herd animals such as deer and elk use it as a form of communication.  I’ve even seen Whitetail and Mullie bucks follow a scent trial like a hound.  Nose down; oblivious to anything, but the doe they are trailing.  Scent is an amazing tool, which is underutilized by many hunters.  To be successful on a regular basis you have to try and get the odds in your favor. You have to talk like them, sound like them and yes, smell like them.  Scents can be used to cover up unwanted smells such as your hunting buddy’s bad habit of smoking or the fact that your wife used a fabric softener on your camo’s.  I recently experienced the fabric softener problem myself.  Even one of my hunting partners could smell the damming odor.    More importantly in my mind is the fact that scents can be used lure game into shooting range.   A good grunt call can stop an animal just long enough to give you a shot but scents can not only stop him, but also position him into your shooting lane.  Over looking the scent factor is a big mistake that you shouldn’t make.  Personally I prefer 100% pure natural scents like HARMONS.   These are scents derived from the animals themselves.  There is no substitute for Mother Nature and I need every advantage I can get because I love to hunt Mullies in the rut.  That mans that I have to hunt them up close and personal with a bow.  If the wind changes I want him to smell a doe in estrous not my body odor.   Give yourself every advantage you can.  Use calls and use scents.  You may be surprised at the results this combination will produce.  As a matter of fact check out  “An Incredible Experience” its about a close encounter with a small herd of Muledeer, while using, yes you guessed it, a call and  a cover scent.  The combination is, well absolutely incredible.
