Product Review: Sticky Weight

Any avid angler adds weight to something or another.  I have bullet weights, dropshot weights, Carolina weights, and the list goes on.  While attending the 2002 Bass University, at Glendale Community College, I got the chance to sit down with the defending Bassmasters Classic Champion, Kevin Van Dam, and one of our topics was, yes, weights.  He told me of a new innovation he had begun using and was thrilled at its many applications.  I know the pros are often in a position to endorse their sponsor’s product, but the kicker is, he has no ties to Sticky Weight.  He gave me a container of the new product and began to demonstrate its many uses.

The best way to describe it is that it resembles Silly Putty.  Sticky Weight comes in a small plastic container that contains a chunk of tungsten wrapped in cellophane.  He took the tungsten out of the wrap and began molding and rolling it in his palms.  He started to tell me of the environmental advantages first, and the fact that this product is lead-free.  He added that it dissolves in water within 18-24.

Next we spoke of the many applications for this universal product.  Basically you could use it in place of any of the traditional weights, and began to notice its added benefits.  For instance: 1- In a dropshot rig, you could mold this to your line in a thin strip, virtually eliminating the potential of a snag.  2- Kevin likes to use a drop of this product to peg his texas-rigged sinkers. 3- I quickly mentioned the use on jerkbaits, spinnerbaits, and crankbaits that you want more depth out of.  4- I planned to use it while sight fishing with tubes this year, in order to get more distance on my cast by sticking a bit on the back of the hook.

The neat thing about Sticky Weight, is you simply roll it back into the rest of the material once you are done with it, and you can use it again.  The only fault I found with it was that it can be a bit messy.  It was hard to get off of my hands and you don’t want it on your boat.   It actually bled down my bait and on the boat when it was hot and wet.  This isn’t enough to stop me from using the product, however.  There is much more positives with this product than negatives.  I recently sat down with Lead Master owner, Jim Pearce, and discussed these issues.  The product is brand new and he plans to address this side effect.
