Saltwater Tackle Tips Adding a power handle. Most Penn reel handles are interchangeable. The Penn 113 and the International 12t handles will fit a Penn Jigmaster 500/501. The power handles are more ergonomically suited for really hard cranking.
Storing Your Reel Basic Reel Care When storing your reel make sure the drags are backed off completely. Storing the reel with the drags button down will compress the drag washers. When heading out or back on a charter, button the drags down. This will prevent salt spray from entering the reel. As soon as you can, rinse the reel off in fresh water. Button the drag down and use a gentle spray on the reel. A strong spray will drive the salt into the reel. Amberjack Reels amberjack@cox.net After you have landed your fish, strip off approx 10-15 feet of your line. This portion of the line usually will get nicked by the boat, gaff or other lines in the water, thus making it weak. When spooling your reels make sure they are full. And DO NOT throw the line into the ocean.
Ringed Hooks Ringed hooks are a 1/0 or larger circle hook with a small welded steel ring though the eye. The purpose is let the bait swim more naturally. I have used these for tuna in San Diego with excellent results. They are not cheap at around $1.25 each, but worth it. Amberjack Performance Reels Jpowell@mbakercorp.com Hook Keeps Many saltwater rods do not have them. Never put your hook into the eye of a rod. If it nicks the eye it will also nick the line making it weak. A simple solution is to use zip ties. Zip ties come with a cable eye already built in or you can add a stainless split ring. Add the Zip tie to the front of the rod where the rod meets the grip. Use a pair of pliers to tighten the zip tie so it does not slip. The Zip tie can also be placed on the reel seat behind the reel.
