Muzzle Loader’s 101
Do you want to try hunting or shooting with a smoke pole. How about taking big game like our ancestors did in the early years of this great country. If you do, look for upcoming articles on Muzzleloaders and their accessories. You’ll find the things your gonna need to know like, how do I sight a muzzleloader in and what load and bullet do I use, as well as tips on keeping it clean and so much more. Ok everyone its time to get those ole smoke poles out and dust them off. But, just in case you don’t own one, we’re beginning with what a beginner needs to know to get started. So if you’re a newbe, follow along and I’ll try and help ya figure things out.
First off your probably asking yourself questions like, what brand do I buy? What kind (side lock or In-line)? Should I mount a scope on it? These are all good questions. There are hundreds of brands makes and models to choose from. It can get very confusing. My first suggestion is let your wallet or in my case my girlfriend be your guide. Don’t get a real expensive one just in case you decide you really don’t want to stay with this sport. That way you’re not out of a lot of cash money and you don’t wind up on the couch for a few nights. Take a look at a CVA or Traditions brands to start with both make great Muzzleloaders are not that expensive and both make side locks and in-lines. Look for one that is already taped and drilled for a scope mount. Shop around, talk to other hunters and shooters before you decide which one will fit ya best. After you decide go try one on for size. Does the gun feel right? Is the gun within your budget? If you answered yes congratulations. Oh be sure to buy something for her so ya don’t get in trouble. Along with the rifle you will need several accessories, we’ll go into that next week.
Thank you all and I hope over the next few weeks I will be able to help you get started in this great sport. If you have any questions shoot a me e-mail and I’ll be glad to parlay with ya. R L Gray, Contributing writer
