Can't explain it - I'm
hooked!
OK, two weeks ago, I'm invited to shoot a few
arrows at the new Hassyampa
Bowhunters Club range in Wickenburg. As the Webmaster of
Az Outdoorsman, I didn't think it was appropriate to turn down this
offer, considering that the offer came from the Executive Editor and the
Archery Editor.
I had never pulled back the string of a bow in my
life, never even thought about it much. Didn't know the gang had loaned
me an old beat up Compound Bow. Didn't even recognize that the arrows
had more switchbacks than the road to Jerome. Didn't know enough to know
that the thing didn't even have sights. I just pointed in the general
direction and, twang, found a new sport. I knew it from that first
arrow. My claim to immortal fame lies in the fact I even won the 10th
station with that gear.
Gears grinding on the way home!
Had to leave Wickenburg and head back to my town of Buckeye that
evening and knew I could never buy my own equipment without the
assistance of someone on the AZOD team. But, on that drive, I knew I
would...soon. It was almost Christmas after all!
Make a plan and follow it!
The following Saturday I had to be in Wickenburg for an AZOD company
meeting and to get my truck done:

During the meeting, I made
arrangements for my good friend and business partner, Robert G. Willis
(also the Exec. Editor) to take me to Double
D's Archery Section after the meeting. Everyone at AZOD (and
others) can't seem to speak highly enough of "Creed" (the
Owner) and his folks, so I knew that was my choice (It had nothing to do
with the fact I would get 10% off my purchase, like you can if you
mention Az Outdoorsman).
Silly Novice me!
I thought I would go in, point to a nice looking bow, write a check
and be gone. (John Samsill, Archery Editor had called ahead and reserved
a PSE Diamondback for me). After an hour or more of the most customer
focused support I've ever received I left with my new toys! I had NO
IDEA how much was involved in getting a bow set up for an individual.
Creed was awesome in every respect but what I really appreciated was the
way he picked up on the fact I had NO Archery knowledge at all, and
proceeded to explain each thing he did and the "why" behind
it. He taught me while he built my bow. Unbelievable.
Are you in love with it, she asks!
That night, at home, I sat back in my recliner and read all of the
material that came with the bow and it's auxiliary equipment. Then, with
the bow in my lap, I studied it. What a magnificent work of engineering
these things are. Nothing like the way I had always thought of bows. I
simply marveled at the mechanics of it all when I got the comment
(above) from my better half.
I've probably put a hundred arrows
though my Diamondback now...and recently started practice at 40 yds:
I think I'm getting the hang of it.
I
have spoken to quite a few Archers since I got my bow and my story, "Love
at first Arrow" is apparently not uncommon.
I'll still be pounding on the Key Board helping to keep AZOD the best
Arizona Outdoor information source available, but I might be thinking
ARCHERY also!!
