When Hunting Elk, Sometimes Less Can Be More
Hunting for elk can be hard work. The rough, high altitude country where they live makes for hard going just to get to them. Once inside their domain you’ll travel from five to fifteen miles per day to find them to possibly get a shot, with no guarantees of either. All this is not only hard on your body it takes its toll on you mentally. Knowing when to give yourself an easy day is very important. I’ve hunted myself into physical exhaustion and severe mental fatigue. This is when you will begin to make mental mistakes and give up physically. Your no longer willing to walk over the next ridge or go after that bull that bugled in the distance. I know guys who will work extremely hard one day then sit a stand or at least hunt light the next. No matter what kind of physical shape your in you must know when to back off just a bit to keep sharp and ready when an opportunity presents itself. If you’re at the end of your hunt by all means lay it on the line and hunt as hard as you can. Remember at the beginning of your hunt if you burn yourself out and are not going to be much good at the end. So remember sometimes less is more.
