What Exactly is 3-D Archery?

3-D archery is an archery course where participates shoot at realistic three-dimensional animal targets. Scores are based on the location of shot placement as it relates to the preferred shot placement a hunter would use for harvesting that particular animal.  For instance a heart shot rewards the most points usually 10 or 12 points.  A shot just outside the heart area (the lungs) awards 8 points. Any hit on the target outside these two areas gets a score of 5.

Shooters are separated by category, which is determined by the type of bow, release and age.   Different categories of shooters compete from different distances.  The Junior Cub class (5-8 year olds) usually doesn't have a minimum distance from which to shoot. Starting at the next level up (Cub class, 9-12 year olds), there is a minimum distance.

Most tournaments have a total of 36 targets.  The targets can be anything from a deer, to a coyote. Usually you'll find most North American Big game Species are represented.  Its really like playing golf with a bow, and just like a golf course the position of the targets vary, as does the degree of difficulty.  The shots may be straight, uphill, downhill, across a wash or between a couple of boulders.  3-D Archery Tournaments places the archer on natural terrain and in positions similar to those of a real hunt.

Sometimes participants walk over difficult terrain, and there are always lots of shooting. Good hiking boots and a must and shooters also need to take all the precautions just like any other day in the field. Some courses are easy to traverse but others like my favorite, The Hassyampa Bowhunters Club in Wickenburg are set over very difficult terrain.

Most bowhunters use these tournaments for practice during the off season or as a warm-up just before Archery Season begins.  An Arizona favorite is the Bowhunter Happening sponsored by the Arizona Bowhunters Association, www.arizonabowhunters.org.   This tournament takes place in July just before Arizona's Archery season begins.  The shoot is located in the cool pines of Flagstaff, a welcome diversion for us lowlanders.  3-D Archery is a great sport for the whole family and you will see entire families out on the course spending time together passing on their outdoor heritage and creating new family traditions. So if you would like to take up archery or archery hunting check out the 3-D Archery Tournaments in Arizona.  For more information on 3-D Archery contact one of the clubs listed in our Archery Section.  There's also a very comprehensive tournament schedule.
