THE HEART OF ARCHERY By Todd J Hulm
This past weekend I was fortunate enough to participate in an event that typifies the wholesome goodness inherent in archery. Unlike many other sports, archers seem to befriend their fellow competitors and view their shared experience on the range as an opportunity to build relationships and test their own skills without regard for whether or not they are able to outscore another shooter. Archers are simply able to experience success without needing to defeat someone else. Team AZOD along with Desert Bowhunters teamed up to hold a benefit shoot for a young man and his family who are dealing with Leukemia. Ernest Moreno of Team AZOD and Glenn Jones of Desert Bowhunters spear-headed the efforts along with several members of each staff to put on an outstanding shoot at the Ben Avery Archery Facility. No awards were given, No places were taken, No trophy was on display, No scorecards were turned in. Prizes were given in the raffle that was held, and thanks to the many good-hearted donors, the raffle was also a great success. The Smoker Course was a lot of fun, and archers were even able to take shots at a "running" javalina. The many kids in attendance had a great time and "cleaned-house" in the kids’ raffle. Again, thanks to the many donations, the kids all received several great prizes and put many of their new weapons to use as "World War Three with WATER GUNS" broke out to conclude the day. So the question that "Competitive" archer asks is, "Who Won?" The Answer: WE ALL DID! Over $3500 was raised to help defray the medical expenses being charged to the family. As a parent and fellow Human Being, I feel great sympathy for this family as they continue to deal with a situation that would be devastating to us all. And if you take a moment to reflect, your priorities may change based upon how lucky we are to be healthy and to have a healthy family. Again, No Awards were given, No places were taken, No trophy was on display, and No scorecards were turned in. Wow! What a great sport! Isn’t it neat to see "The Heart of Archery!"
