Finding a quality kids bow
by Gary Miller Team AZOD
A little over a year ago I set out to get my 4-year-old daughter a bow so that she could start attending 3D shoots with me. I had a heck of a time finding a bow that would work for her. The draw length was to long, the bow was too heavy, or the poundage of the bow would not adjust low enough for my daughter to pull it back. I ended up getting her one of the little compounds that shot an arrow but getting it to stick in the target was another story. She attended a few shoots with me toting her little bow, but was frustrated because she couldn’t tell where she hit and, most of all, get her wonderful score of a 5 or better. It’s important for them to see their accomplishments and record their score in the same way as the other archers. They are so excited to hit the target, but when they hear their score it adds to the excitement.
With my daughter’s frustration inspiring me, I decided I had to find a bow that she could shoot. A bow that would actually shoot an arrow over 30 feet, and a bow she would be happy with. Finally, after a lot of research on the net and talking to a lot of people, I found Stacey Archery. Located in Idaho Falls, Idaho, Stacey has been in business for many years producing a diversified product line ranging from kid’s bows up to adult bows and the accessories that go along with them. I purchased Stacey’s Tom Thumb II for my daughter. Wow, what a bow for the younger generation! In my opinion this bow is hands down the best little bow on the market for the parents looking to get young children into the sport of archery.
With the creation of its Tom Thumb compound bow, Stacey Archery has helped introduce an even younger group of archers to the sport of archery. With draw lengths as short as 16" and draw weights as low as 10 lbs., children four years old and younger are now able to learn archery with a bow of equal or better quality than their parents. No corners have been cut in the building of the Tom Thumb. All Tom Thumb bows are built the same way and with the same materials as their full size bows. Nothing on these bows is made from plastic, pressed, stamped or cast. These little bows feature 100% C.N.C. machined riser and wheels from solid blocks of 6061-T6 aluminum with a hard anodized finish in 6 color choices, a split wood grip, and either gold or black hardware trim. 100% C.N.C. machined limb pockets from 6061-T6 aluminum with rocker stud mounts that ensure 3 point alignment. Stacey Archery also offers an upgrade policy with each bow. As the child grows out of one wheel size, for a small fee Stacey will outfit the bow with the next size wheel and string which will increase the draw length and draw weight. Why buy cheap starter bows made out of plastic which may not even last a year when, for a few dollars more, you can have the beauty, quality and performance that will last for generations.

If you live in the phoenix area and are interested in trying one of the Tom Thumb bows for your child I would be glad to meet you at the range so you can actually see the quality of these bows and your youngster can shoot a few arrows for him or herself. I am at practically every shoot at Ben Avery and sometimes Usery Mountain. I have my daughters bow (LH) and my niece’s bow (RH), both of which are Tom Thumbs that would cover an age group of 4 to about 11 years of age. If you would like to coordinate a meeting time or have any other questions, email me at gmiller@azod.com.
Our children are our future, what parents teach or introduce a child to will be a life lasting experience. Introduce a child to archery and see the contagious smile that grows on their face.
