Scent Tips

Wash all of your clothing, outer and inner, in unscented detergent. Store your outer and inner clothing separately in scent free bags. There are several brands of dry bags on the market that work great for this, but give them the smell test before buying to make sure they don't have offensive odors of their own. Outer clothing should be washed about twice a week and inner clothing should be changed daily.

 To answer this question lets take a good look at how conditions in the field affect a deer's ability to pick up scent. In Arizona, most of the time we have an extremely dry climate, which causes the deer’s nasal passages to dry out.  Scent molecules are inhaled without being trapped on the epithelium (tissue lining) of the nose where they can be chemically broken down and detected.
Extreme cold also inhibits a deer's scenting ability. Not only is cold air generally dry, but it also has the effect for pushing the molecules quickly to the ground where they don't travel and are not easily detected.
Hot weather creates thermal drafts, which rise upward.  When there is no wind, thermals can be used to your advantage, because they are predictable and these currents will carry your scent straight up. Deer may pass very close under these conditions and not smell you.
Unfortunately, while there are conditions that inhibit a deer's ability to smell your scent, the ranges of conditions that are ideal for deer scenting you are much wider.  Deer smell best when humidity levels range from approximately 20 to 80 percent, and when temperatures range from 40 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit and that includes with winds blowing up to about 15 miles per hour. Some experts feel that under the broad range of conditions a deer can smell a person who has taken no scent precautions for as much as half-mile.
