Hiking Wilderness Area’s Arizona has its share of wilderness areas. All roads into these areas are closed and access is only by horse or on foot. When hiking these rugged areas you got to have a good pair of hiking boots. Traction and ankle support are the main idea here. The last thing you want to do is to twist an ankle miles from help. I have also seen hikers and hunters alike buy a pair of boots that are one size to big so that they can whear 2 pair of socks. The only problem is that it causes blisters. Buy a pair of boots that fit right and wear a pair of heavy wool socks. If you can’t afford a good pair of waterproof boots then you should use a waterproof spray and treat them. Remember dry warm feet, will take you anywhere. Denim jeans wear well but do not provide much warmth in extreme cold. If you must wear them hiking, then carry warmer pants or long johns just in case the weather conditions change. I have seen the weather at high elevations turn real nasty, real quick and even in lower elevation when the sun goes down it can get real cold. T-shirts are comfortable and should be used under your outer shirts. Yes, I said outer shirts. You really should layer your clothing. It’s better to remove additional clothing and have it just in case conditions change than not have it at all. A warm hat is a necessity 90% of the body’s heat loss is through the head. A scarf and mittens should also be carried. Yep your backpack is for carrying the things you need to be comfortable in the wilderness and of course it also is a necessity. Well along with all this clothing be sure to carry some dried food and extra water just in case something happens. You never know! It’s always better to have the things you need than to do without and by the way modern technology is wonderful and can save your life. Carry a cell phone. Good hiking and if you pack it in-pack it out R L Gray Camping/Hiking Editor Team AZOD The discomfort of the
