Get your poles ready: free fishing day is June 12

 

PHOENIX - Get your fishing poles and picnic baskets ready: free fishing day is June 12 in Arizona on public waters.

Arizona Game and Fish officials say that during Arizona's free fishing day, you do not need a fishing license to fish the state's public waters. As part of the event, fishing clinics are being offered at many locations on June 12, including:

 

  • Cortez Park, 35th Ave. and Dunlap Road, Phoenix, 7 a.m. to noon. The Game and Fish Department and Wal-Mart are partnering to offer a full day of fishing, prizes and fun activities. You can fish for channel catfish and hybrid sunfish. Extra fish will be stocked for this event. Sign up at the Wal-Mart canopies and you will be eligible for a raffle with prizes donated by Wal-Mart.   • Red Mountain Park, Brown and Sterling roads, Mesa, 7 to 11 a.m. There will be free loaner rods and reels, free bait and free instruction courtesy the Game and Fish Department. The department is stocking hybrid sunfish in an area netted off for fishing. There will also be a display aquaria on site. Bring the whole family and enjoy the outing.   • Lynx Lake, Prescott, 7 a.m. to noon in the beautiful pines on the flanks of the Bradshaw Mountains. Game and Fish and the U.S. Forest Service are cosponsoring this event. For more information, contact Noelle Fletcher at (928) 443-8000
     
  • Lake Pleasant Regional Park, 10-lane boat ramp area (near the visitor's center), in Phoenix, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., sponsored by the Game and Fish Department and Maricopa County Parks. Sign up at the Game and Fish Department booth to get free loaner rods and reels, free bait, and volunteer instructors to help you with your personal tackle. Families are encouraged to attend. Lake Pleasant is home to largemouth bass, striped bass, sunfish, and channel catfish. Pleasant is the only state lake with white bass and white crappie.   • Seligman free fishing day hosted by the Game and Fish Department and the Town of Seligman starting at 8 a.m. This day features free loaner rods and reels, basic instructions, bait and prizes. Game and Fish will have instructors on sight from noon to sunset to assist fishing novices. Contact Tim Pender, (928) 422-3304.
     
  • Sahuarita Lake, 7-11 a.m., sponsored by the Game and Fish Department and the Town of Sahuarita. Sign up at the Game and Fish booth to get free loaner rods and reels, free bait, and volunteer instructors to help you with your personal tackle. Families are encouraged to attend. There will be bass, sunfish, great catfish, and monster carp to catch. Contact Ti Piper at (505) 281-5647.
     
  • Surprise, Surprise Lake, 7 to 11 a.m. The Game and Fish Department will supply free loaner rods and reels, free bait, and free instruction. Bring the whole family and enjoy the outing. Contact Walt Oxley at (623) 412-0240.
