William G. Griswold, DVM

A 1999 graduate of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, William (Billy) Griswold practices small animal emergency medicine in Gilbert , Arizona .  Doctor Griswold is married and makes his home in Chandler ; he and his wife Dr. Karin Burns share their home with several pets, including a Deutsch Drahthaar, three cats, and numerous reptiles.

Ed ucation and Training:  Doctor Griswold earned a Bachelor’s of Science in zoology with a minor in French from the University of Florida in 1995.  His veterinary education at the University of Florida focused on small animal medicine and surgery with additional training in exotic animal and zoological medicine.  Following receipt of his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1999, Dr. Griswold completed an internship in small animal medicine and surgery in Mesa, Arizona.  Conducted at a multi-doctor general practice and specialty hospital, this internship provided extensive experience and additional training in general and preventative medicine, internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, cardiology, radiology, dentistry, and emergency medicine.

Professional Background and Interests:  Following his internship, Dr. Griswold spent two years in general small animal practice in Tempe , Arizona .  For the last 5 years, he has practiced emergency medicine and critical care at Emergency Animal Clinic, PLC, a four-hospital, 24-hour emergency practice serving veterinarians and pet owners throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Dr. Griswold enjoys the pace and challenge of emergency medicine, and is particularly interested in anesthesia/analgesia (pain relief), critical care management of complex medical cases, medical management of working dogs, and trauma and reconstructive surgery.  He places considerable emphasis on the human side of veterinary medicine, and takes great efforts to address the needs of his patients’ human companions as well. 

Personal Interests:  Dr. Griswold enjoys a variety of outdoor pursuits, including upland bird and small game hunting, big game hunting, and bird dog training.  Free-time during the non-hunting months is spent hiking, camping, and searching for reptiles and amphibians.  Dr. Griswold is a published author of both scientific and popular articles and an accomplished photographer; many of his reptile and amphibian photographs have appeared in books and magazines.

Dr. Griswold is proud to hunt with “Rana,” a Deutsch Drahthaar trained by his own hand.  The experience of raising and training his first gundog has given Dr. Griswold a much greater appreciation for the challenges inherent in working with intelligent, active dogs.   Dr. Griswold is an active member of the Verein Deutsch Drahthaar Group North America (VDD-GNA) and the JGHV.  He serves Arizona and southern California as a kennel inspector and tattoo agent for the VDD-GNA.
