“What should I take in the field with me?”
by
Dave King
This is a common questioned asked by most first timers before they embark on their first Arizona quail hunt. For those that have dogs, the items that go with you could be the difference in saving or losing your hunting companion. Here is a list of items that you should always have with you when you go out.
Water:
It is extremely important that you take enough water for you and your dog. A good idea is to grab a hydration pack from one of the many outdoor stores. They usually carry 70-120 ounces and run anywhere from $20-$50 depending on size and brand. They really help cut down on the vest space that water bottles would usually fill
Pliers:
A pair of needle nose pliers, or better yet a multi-tool, is extremely helpful when it comes to removing cactus from a dog or from you. Also with the multi-tool you can make small repairs out in the field like prying a jammed shell out of the gun.
Leash:
Sometimes while out hunting you might run across a heard of javelina or other desert dwelling critters. By using a leash you can restrain the dog from further chasing and lead them away from possible danger.
First-Aid Kit:
The most important item you should have besides water. You can buy complete kits from the major catalog companies or some local stores also sell them. Your kit should include items such as gauze, hydrogen peroxide, thermometer, iodine pads, saline solution, tourniquet, cold packs, eye wash solution, scissors, forceps, skin staple (which should only be used if you know what you are doing), alcohol prep pads, styptic pencil, hydrocortisone, cotton swabs, pill gun, vinyl gloves and an instruction booklet that explains how to use the items. I personally use a Creative Pet Products kit that costs around $35 and contains all the items listed.
Veterinarian:
You should always carry a number of an emergency pet clinic with you. This way if you do ever get into trouble in the field you can talk to a professional and find out exactly what to do or let them know that you are bringing your dog in. That also means it’s a good idea to pack a cell phone with you
These are just a few items that you should take but I feel that these are the most important. If you have these you will be able to handle or avoid most situations that might come your way. Have fun and always be safe our in the field.
