Any Turkey

Fall turkey, a time where a lot people believe that turkeys will not respond to a call. Well that is not necessarily true. The fall turkey hunt is a popular hunt with a lot of people.  Most of the time fall hunters hunt them pretty much the same way they hunt deer. They travel from ridge to ridge and glass the openings on the hillsides or still hunt the country around water holes. From what I understand these hunters are somewhat successful. I am myself a spring turkey hunter. But I have hunted the fall hunt with a few of my friends and have been able to get the birds to come to a call.

Turkey’s remain vocal all year round. They are sociable and have to communicate between each other. The last years hatch still stay very close to the hen. The juvenile turkeys are probably the most talkative. I have found that if you cannot find the birds by glassing for them I like to get up on a ridge top and sound off with a lost hen yelp or the kee-kee run. The lost hen yelp is just a long succession of yelps. When I mean long I’m talking about sounding off with 12 to 15 yelps, waiting about 30 seconds and repeating the series. The kee-kee run call is a sound a juvenile turkey makes. It’s hard to describe the call but I’ll try to explain. It starts out with 1 low sounding peep and about 4 high-pitched peeps followed by 5 or 6 higher sounding yelps. Repeat this series of calls 3 to 4 times. Try to wait for a few seconds between each session so you can listen for any responders. If you get a response start moving in that direction, occasionally calling back to the turkey as you approach. Be careful that you don’t call too much. When you are within no more than 200 yards pick an area where you will be able to see from as many directions as possible and take a stand. Make sure you are ready to shoot once you are in this position. Start calling using a variety of calls beginning with some soft yelps and purrs. One of the most effective calls I have found for this or any type of turkey calling situation is the Match Maker Turkey call by Modern Call Products. With this single call you will be able to purr and yelp at the same time. When I am talking a purr I mean a putt and purr. This call says that everything is all right and has a calming effect on turkeys. The use of a decoy is also recommended. The decoy’s I use are the decoys made by Feather Flex.

Combining these techniques and devices should aid in your success for the fall any turkey hunt. If you have any further questions or comments feel free to submit them to me at Hunting@azod.com.
