Campfire Safety and Fire Starter Tips

With hunting season about to begin, there will be lots of people out there building campfires. Don’t let a ticket from the forest service or worse yet a wild fire spoil your hunt.

Here a few campfire tips from the AZOD editors.

First, you must ensure that fires are not prohibited in the area that you are camping at. The links to the latest fire restrictions can be found in the camping and hiking section of AZOD.

Campfire Safety:

      1.  Choose the size of the fire to fit your needs

      2.  Choose a safe site

           A. Clear enough space around the fire for safety

B..Make sure that enough water and/or dirt and extinguishing tools are on hand

C..Ensure there are no overhanging limbs that could catch fire

           D.  Plan enough time for the fire to burn down before you leave.

E.Take ALL precautions to be sure the fire is out

Easy waterproof matches:

Especially useful for those early hunts during the monsoon season. Just dip the combustible end of the match into some melted wax or paint them with nail polish. Store in metal box or can.

 Fire starters:

There is plenty of natural tinder out there, but if it has been raining, homemade fire starters are well worth the effort.

Put dry excelsior, sawdust or wood shavings in and old pan and cover with melted candles or paraffin. Once cooled, cut into squares. We like to pour the mixture into cardboard egg cartons. You just break off as much as you need to use and light.

Remember. Safety first, especially if you want to be hunting at that spot in the years to come.
