Is it a Monster Buck?

Deer season is closing in fast. I have been out there with the rest of you doing some pre season scouting. This year I have the great privilege of hunting with my 18-year-old daughter.

My goal is to find and get her a shoot at one of those big desert bucks, After making several scouting trips I am beginning to get excited and really looking forward to this years hunt.

Those 30 plus inch bruisers are far and few between. One of the best way’s I have found to field judge a desert buck is by his ears. The average desert mulie will have a 20 inch gap between his ears; this is when the ears are spread out. To get one of them to look at you make a slight noise and he will turn his head and spread his ears out. Look to see how far the gap is between the ear and the inside of his antlers.

For instance a buck I found the other day (the place will remain a secret for now) had about a 5 to 6 inch gap between the tip of his ear and the inside of his antlers. So if you take the 20 inches between his ears and add the 12 inches for the gaps between his ears and antler we were looking at a possible 32-inch monster.

I hope this will help you to field judge the desert bucks. And if you happen to get one this season make sure to send azod a pic so we can add it to the brag page in the hunting section.

Good luck and good judging
