Silhouette Shooters Do It Standing Up
By Manuel A. Sinohui
Hassayampa Rod and Gun Club was the host to the Arizona Small-bore Rifle Silhouette State Championships. The Ben Avery Shooting Facility was the scene of the two-day shooting event held April 12 and 13. Eighty-seven competitors from several US states and Mexico entered 130 rifles in the Standard and Hunting Rifle Events.
The course of fire and time limit for this shooting competition is as follows: All firing is done from the standing position, offhand. A time limit of 2-1/2 minutes is the rule for five shots fired on each target and in sequence. One shot per target. Any other is considered a miss. Chicken targets are fired at 40 meters (43.7 yards), javalina targets at 60 meters (65.6 yards), turkey targets at 87 meters (84.2 yards), and ram targets at 100 meters (109.4 yards).
Augustin Sanchez, a junior shooter from Baja, Mexico shot his way to the state championship with an aggregate score of 100x120 in the Standard Rifle Class. William Zander a Houston, Texas shooter took the Hunting Rifle Match with a 97x100.
The highlights of the shooting match were the numerous prizes given away to the shooters, the lucky ones I should say. All items were donated by the shooting industry. They are truly appreciated by the Hassayampa Rod and Gun Club.
Bill Abott, a shooter from Mesa, Arizona was the lucky winner of Krieger Barrel. Mike Aillo from Tucson, Arizona took home a McMillan stock.
