    Pup is Snubbing Land Retrieves
By Robert Milner, excerpted from Retriever Training: A Back to Basics Approach

Q: I have a 6-month-old male Lab. Before he was introduced to the water I had no problems with him retrieving on land. After one time of retrieving in water he will no longer pick up a bumper on land. Even if I throw right on the bank he will not pick it up. What is the best solution to my situation? Another problem is that he will not deliver to hand. As soon as he steps out of the water he drops. Is this to be expected of a puppy? Could this be from my wife's playing "fetch" with him and taking "toys" (i.e. stuffed animals) from him and throwing again? I have not used treats as a reward, only praised him. Should I try a treat as reward? From Jeremy McDade

A: From professional trainer Robert Milner: My current gundog Jake, lost interest at 6 to 8 months of age. My response was to simply forget the retrieving for a couple of months. I had seen earlier that the instinct was there, so I wasn't really worried about it. I knew that instinct wasn't going anywhere. I didn't worry about why he quit though it was probably a sore mouth from going thru the process of losing his juvenile teeth.

Generally the best program for a young dog that loses interest is to lay off the retrieving for a few weeks. Quite frequently the root cause of the lost interest is too much retrieving and overwork. A puppy doesn't need a lot of practice and training in the retrieving behavior that he is born with. He needs the practice and training in the obedience behavior that he is not born with. Train the obedience as a game with lots of positive reinforcement ("good dogs" and petting). Come back to the retrieving in a few weeks.

Congressional Action Could Be Watershed for Wildlife
A group of leading wildlife and conservation groups has united in support of “Farm Bill” conservation programs currently being evaluated by Congress. On June 6, congressional testimony delivered by Ducks Unlimited represented 40 organizations with a combined membership of ten million individuals.

“The current conservation provisions Congress is looking at have created more wildlife habitat than any other federal program. This year will be a watershed year for wildlife—the Farm Bill programs will hopefully be increased or at the very least renewed,” said Scott Sutherland, director of governmental affairs for Ducks Unlimited. ***CONSERVATION***

    Latest Habitat Conditions
Habitat conditions are mixed across the breeding grounds. East of a line through central Saskatchewan and the central Dakotas, moisture has been abundant and production is expected to be very good. West of that line it has been extremely dry to the extent that many locations in Alberta, for example, have been declared to be agricultural disaster areas as there isn't enough moisture to produce a grain crop.

Overall, the fall flight will not likely increase over last year's, but it will almost certainly have fewer young in western populations than in regions from the center of the continent to the east coast. Production surveys are run in July and will be eagerly anticipated by waterfowl hunters and managers. Full Story

    On the Side
A special thanks to DU member Chuck Kartak of center City, MN, for this tip featured in 161 Waterfowling Secrets

Don’t place your decoys immediately upwind of your blind. Instead, place them slightly to one side so the movements of dogs and hunters won’t be as noticeable when ducks are circling the decoys.
