Dredging to Start At Rose Canyon Lake

The dredging of Rose Canyon Lake is scheduled to start on Monday, Sept. 10, which could make the lake un-fishable until next spring.

This project will last several months, rendering the lake un-fishable until the lake is refilled by the winter rains and is restocked in the spring. Anglers are encouraged to avoid this lake until renovation is complete and restocking has occurred.

Runoff from the rains in October 2000 caused an excess of sedimentation to buildup in the lake, which made this project essential to fishing. “Without dredging, the lake would eventually become filled with debris, completely closing it to fishing” said Don Mitchell, fisheries biologist with the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Mitchell suggested that cold water anglers visit the lakes, rivers and streams found in northern and eastern Arizona. Additionally, he reminds anglers that lakes around Tucson are wonderful for warm water fishing.

“Patagonia Lake, Pena Blanca Lake, Arivaca Lake, and Parker Canyon Lake are areas where anglers can take the whole family camping and fishing,” said Mitchell.
