Arizona Wilderness Productions continues to gather footage for upcoming video production of “SIMPLY SHOTGUNS”. (Pictures
at end of article) This
weekend we were invited to Desert Pheasant Recreation to hunt Pheasant, Chucker
& Bob White Quail. We had the
privilege to be guided by Ken Levy who owns, sells and trains some of the most
beautiful and skilled hunting dogs in the state. Hunting
with us were: Glenn
Willis (CEO for Arizona Outdoorsman) Gary
McCraw (Shooting Editor for Arizona Outdoorsman) Andy
Kohly (Shooting Dog Editor for Arizona Outdoorsman) The
November morning was cool and we were ready to get started, Ken’s dogs were
raring to go, you could feel the excitement in the air.
The
first field we hunted held Chucker and Quail, Ken gave the command to his dogs,
they skillfully worked their way left and right covering what seemed like every
square inch of the alfalfa field. Then
suddenly as if controlled by radar the first dog swung to the left and honed in
on her quarry, we waited in anticipation for the bird to flush. Without
notice the Chucker exploded out of the knee high alfalfa sending that familiar
sound into the air that only bird dogs and hunters can get excited about.
Shotguns
were whirled around, the closest hunter Glenn Willis took careful aim (don’t
want to be the first to miss) and squeezed the trigger, we heard the report of
the gun but the Chucker kept flying (“can’t miss the next shot I’ll never
hear the end of it”) the next shot cleanly dropped the Chucker.
The dogs eagerly fetched up the bird and brought it to Ken.
We
hunted until 11:30 then the Arizona sun started to heat things up.
The rest of the day was just as exciting as the first bird taken.
We brought home some of the most beautiful Pheasant, Chucker & Bob
white Quail (Thanksgiving Dinner). Can’t
wait to try out Ken’s secret recipe. The
company of friends Glenn, Gary & Andy made for a very enjoyable day. Oh,
I forgot to mention that I didn’t miss a bird the whole day, all captured on
film for all of you to see. Desert
