Water
Hauling For Wildlife Hits 1.2 Million Gallon Mark
Water hauling for wildlife to help offset the effects of the
drought in Arizona has hit the 1.2-million-gallon mark this year, with
more yet to come, advised Arizona Game and Fish Department officials.
Assistant Director Kerry Baldwin said that while much of the
state has had some relief due to the monsoon storms, vast areas of
western Arizona have not received significant rainfall in some time.
Ron Christofferson, wildlife habitat enhancement program manager,
explained that Arizona experienced one of its driest winter and springs
on record. “We’ve been hauling water into wildlife catchments
throughout the state since January. The recent rains are helping many
areas, but there are large areas of the state still suffering from
drought.”
Wildlife conservation organizations have been instrumental in
helping Game and Fish distribute water to wildlife catchments. This
year, the groups have pledged up to $64,619 to the department to offset
the costs of hauling water for wildlife.
“As always in a time of crisis, the wildlife conservation
organizations came through with flying colors,” Baldwin said.
